Sara's Ramblings

The seagulls... were.... nowhere... in sight.

I have been truly and sufficiently inspired by my last post of genius... good thing it's now tomorrow so I can bring out the next Countdown To Christmas Gift..

----------

ON THE 26TH DAY 'TIL CHRISTMAS, THE SARA GAVE TO MEEEEE:

Now seriously, who could have guessed that the whale would explode??

I told you that you had all been naughty... this is what you get for being bad.

Well I haven't slept in 42 hours, so maybe it's bed time... or maybe not.

NB: Sally has beached herself on the living-room floor. I am going to drag her, orca-style into her bedroom.

(couldn't find a link to this particular image, but it's somewhere at www.gapingvoid.com)

Well I have a paper due tomorrow, which is, of course, why I'm blogging. I should get an A+ in the art of procrastination.

Here's a lil' sumthin' sumthin' to kick off the Countdown to Christmas...

---------------

ON THE 27th DAY 'TIL CHRISTMAS, THE SARA GAVE TO MEEEEEEEE:

HUNCHBACK GIRL!!!
(Graphic "design" by John Emmerton © 2003)

This is an old favorite, created and designed by a few of us on a trip to London in 2003... she even has a theme song, guys:

[sung to the tune of Spider-man]
Hunchback Girl! Hunchback Girl!
Senses danger and her back goes curled!

Aaaaand I can't remember the rest. You get the picture, though: it's highly inappropriate, but just delightful enough that I can probably get away with it :).

Some Pre-Christmas Cheer

As most of you know, I work for Starbucks. And as most of you know, I really enjoy the people, the atmosphere, the customers (well, for the most part). Sometimes people will come in for a coffee, and by the time they leave, I am grateful to them for reminding me that there are some really exceptional human beings on this planet.

Here are a couple of stories from the last couple weeks that make me smile:

#1 - We had a homeless man come in a couple of weeks ago, get in the line, order his coffee, and then apologize that he had forgotten his money. We told him not to worry about it, thanked him, gave him his coffee, and I then turned my attention to the next man in the line. He ordered a grande, non-fat, no whip pumpkin spice latte and handed over exact change plus a twoonie. As I returned the two dollars he quietly pushed it back to me and said that he was paying for the coffee that we had just served to the now-gone customer in front of him. In a store full of staff and customers, he wasn't doing it for recognition, but to do something nice for someone else. Now, I realize two dollars isn't a lot of money to most of us, but it allows us to keep serving coffee to people who need a hot drink to stay warm on rainy night.

#2 - Another man who comes in for a hot chocolate or a dark coffee sometimes, whom we don't charge (we can only serve a batch of coffee for 60 minutes before it gets the sink, so at night we have a lot left over anyway!). We usually chat for a while, he gets in out of the cold for a bit... but here's the part that really got us last Friday night. Just before he left, we saw him dump some change in our tip jar and then head out the door. I think it might have been about 35 cents, maybe 50, but we were absolutely floored. Again, what's 35 cents? To me, it's a nuisance. But when it's all the money that you've got... I almost cried.

Anyway, not sure why this needs to be blogged, but I feel like it was necessary. Perhaps it's more for me than you :).*

Thinking of doing a Sara's Countdown to Christmas... it can be the 30 Days of Christmas Crud or something like that... cuz you've all been naughty, of course.

This is Hitler the Snowman... just a taste of the delight that you shall expect in the countdown to Christmas [sings soflty, "Happy Biiiiirthday, Dear Jesus, Happy Birthday to Youuuuuuuuuu.."]

*and what we know is that it's all about me :p

Note to self: When it snows in Vancouver, the busses stop running.

Spent 70 minutes waiting for the bus at 41st and Granville before I gave up and convinced some of the other poor souls sharing the bus shelter to share a cab...

I have now arrived safe and sound at the Gremmerton residence, though, so all's well that ends well.

A calamitous and hilarious end to the weekend!

Today was marked by exceptional, exceptional people. *Insert love here*

"Swimming beneath the waves of happiness and disaster"

Some days I feel like things are about to fall apart... or maybe it's just that I'm about to fall apart.

To be honest, although it's scary to admit, I think today is one of those days. And I'm feeling extremely vulnerable.

(post title comes from this song)

Living it up in the Hamptons...

The last few days have been exceptional... I've been living with John and Sally at their swinging pad, getting heaps of homework done--which I needed so badly to get done!--and the company has been amazing. To think, this friendship was almost ruined. I'm so thankful that integrity won out and that we all learned a lesson in how to love each other better.

-----

Still having a bit of a spiritual crisis (although I'm not sure that's the right term for what's going on), but I'm clinging to the truth that love is what it's all about. Maybe I'll keep on pushing and see what happens.

In OTHER news!

Lesson of the day: NASA has confirmed our worst fears! Apparently, one cannot successfully launch an Oompaloompa into the sun, due to the fact that they are endangered. However, Green Peace has failed as of yet to make a statement, mostly due to lack of interest. More details to come later, so check back often (or not). What we DO know, however, is that said Oompaloompas love to lie face down on the moon, chewing away at its surface (which unconfirmed rumors report to be cheese). That's the pattern that we see in our night's sky (duh).

Life is only perceived through chemicals and emotion
But love, love is the island that overgrows the ocean

When push comes to shove, is it God's word, recorded in the form of a book by an imperfect mankind? Or is it God's word, spoken into the heart of an imperfect woman?

They're telling me different things; very different things. I've been pondering a while now...

Both Book and Heart agree on this, though: "No matter what [we] say, what [we] believe, and what [we] do, [we're] bankrupt without love... love extravagantly." (1 Cor. 13:3,13)

tonight has been all about honesty and courage... and it's been beautiful...
